Why didn't God let us know when Jesus is coming back?
When Jesus left us and went back to His Father in heaven, He promised He would return someday. His disciples asked Him when this would be, but He told them that it wasn't for them to know. (Acts 1:7"...It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.") The important thing for them and us, too, is to always live our lives as though today was the day of Jesus's coming. This way we would always be prepared. (I Thessalonians 5:23 "...and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.") We would always try to do what is right and tell others about God's plan of salvation. Matthew 24:36 tells us that even the angels in heaven don't know the day of Christ's return. Only the Father knows the day. (Matthew 24:36 "But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.")
Even though God doesn't tell us an exact time, He does tell us certain things must happen before Jesus returns. He tells us to watch for these. One of these things is Christ cannot return to earth until His word has been preached to the whole world. It is up to His children (those who have been saved by Christ's blood) to carry the Word to all the world. We can be sure that each day we live is a day closer to the day of His return. (James 5:7-8 "Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh.") What a glorious day for those who are ready for His great return!
